Summer of Smoothies: Wild Blueberry Sweet-Tart

July 28, 2011

Blueberries are so awesome: packed with antioxidants and delicious served so many ways, pretty much everyone loves them. Wild blueberries are even more so: smaller, denser, and more flavorful than their cultivated cousins, they also contain more antioxidants per ounce, especially the superhero “purple” antioxidant anthocyanin.

I was lucky enough to come across a field of wild blueberries while hiking in the country, but you can also find these little treasures at gourmet markets starting in late July or early August.

Light and fruity, the Wild Blueberry Sweet-Tart Smoothie has all the flavor of the childhood favorite candy, without sugar or that chalky feel. Also, the pomegranate juice may help prevent dental plaque, as well as upping the antioxidant quotient. Not only that, it’s a gorgeous purple (have I mentioned that I like purple?), so it looks as good as it tastes. Try it with a weekend brunch, or as an up-and-at-em blast first thing in the morning.
