Other People’s Makeup: Kim Boekbinder

“I really have no natural look.” Kim Boekbinder’s approach to beauty is all-or-nothing. As a performer, composer/musician, and visual artist, Kim has designed her beauty regimen to support her art. “If I’m going out for coffee in the morning, I won’t think to look in the mirror first. I guess that’s pretty unusual for a performer. But then when I want to do myself up, I go for full effect!”

Now getting ready for her upcoming U.S. tour (which is …

Summer of Smoothies: Watermelon Chiller

August can be a hard month: while cramming in as much vacation and beach time as we can muster, we’re also getting ready for all the things we’re planning for fall. But with that full-on, steamy summer heat still going strong, juggling the demands of the two seasons seems almost impossible.

The Watermelon Chiller is perfect for those days when it’s really too hot to do anything, but we’re going to do it anyway. This light, replenishing smoothie is intensely …

Makeup as Ritual: The Sadhus of Nepal

Living in the Western world, it’s easy to take our participation with cosmetics for granted. Whether we use makeup to smooth and conceal, or to express ourselves loudly à la Gaga, we are using it as an accessory, as status, and as a game. But before the commercial cosmetics industry brought so many expressions to market, face paint was a used as a far more potent symbol of identity.

Few people express this tradition as vividly as the Sadhus of …

Summer of Smoothies: All-Tropical Vacation Smoothie

Fruity drinks and the beach are made for each other. After a full day of sun, sand, and salt water, there’s nothing like having a sweet, smooth, and cold drink – maybe with a little rum in it. The All-Tropical Vacation Smoothie is here to be your go-to when things get too hot. And there’s more than just flavor going on here. The pineapple is rich in both vitamin C and enzymes, while the coconut milk adds its electrolytes and …

Summer of Smoothies: Stoned and Enthroned

We’re not advocating any illegal substances here – this indulgence is purely legal. But while indulging in all the fresh summer fruits, we get a little overwhelmed by the variety. So this week’s smoothie includes the little stone fruits – especially apricots and plums – and crowns them with the regal kick of ginger. Here in NYC we have yellow plums and sugar plums as well as the black and red ones, but you can mix up the varieties available …

Summer of Smoothies: Nectarine Sunshine Smoothie

With the Nectarine Sunshine Smoothie, I could go on about nutrition, how nectarines are a balanced source of vitamins and minerals, low in fat, yada yada. But you know the score. It’s a hot August day at the farmer’s market. They were there. Their sun ripened perfume caught my nose and drew me over. I felt their cool, smooth skins, their slight give of perfect ripeness. I tasted the slightly tart sweetness of the samples…and I overbought.

At this …

Other People’s Makeup: Molly Crabapple

“Being an illustrator certainly makes me more dexterous with the tools, but I don’t do my makeup in any proper way.” Molly Crabapple, who paints tartly women, louche men, and fantastical beasts – and who founded Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School – breaks a lot of rules.

“I naturally have this black-and-white coloring – my skin is pale and my hair is dark, so I go with that. I’m a little bit goth, in a Morticia Addams way, so
