Beauty pageant contestants have long been accused of all looking alike. After all, their competition involves reaching towards an “ideal” standard of beauty. But the convergence of beauty ideals plus the ready access to cosmetic surgery may have taken the phenomenon to a new place: contestants in the Miss Korea pageant have been accused of all looking exactly alike. And no, it’s not just Westerners saying it either: in a country where one in five people go under the knife, …

A lot is made of the fashion industry’s extreme beauty standards, and how women consumers feel pressured to look like thirteen year old girls. But what about the girls themselves? Girl Model is a documentary airing on PBS March 24 (then streaming until April 23) that follows Nadya, a thirteen year old model from rural Siberia, to Tokyo, where she is expected to learn her new trade. Autumn at The Beheld gives a full review of the film, which reveals …

Scars: we all have them, and we usually do our best to hide them – the damage makes us feel vulnerable. But there’s healing from telling others our stories. Esther Armah from Emotional Justice is inviting teens of color to share their “scar stories” as part of 30 Days of Fly, an initiative designed to help girls aged 13 to 25 recognize their individual beauty and strength. Launched on March 9, 30 Days of Fly includes a month of …

File under “It took me hours to look this casual”: Los Angeles carpenter Johnny Harrington had been growing his beard on-and-off-again for years, but since the 32 year old was spotted by a modelling agency, his “urban woodsman” look has gone viral. Now that he’s been chosen as the face of U.K. department store John Lewis, he’s admitted that the “hobo-chic” look isn’t as easy to keep up as it seems. He tells the London Evening Standard: “I absolutely …

Say it with me: “Eyelash Jewelry” – it could be the next new thing after 3d nail art. Etsy seller Natalie Russo wanted a more colorful and sturdier alternative to flimsy false eyelashes, so she got out her craft supplies and got to work. Featuring farm animals, fish, and cupcakes, the whimsical bead/wire/polymer clay/feather creations seem like they’d be too heavy, but Natalie says they’re as wearable as false lashes. She tells Fashionista.com ,”If I can’t walk down the …

Mostly when people discriminate against others because of their skin color, it’s racist. But what do you do when your own race is weirded out by you?  Africans born with albinism face more than just discrimination based on their lack of melanin – in many African countries they are believed to have mystical healing powers. With poachers looking to chop their arms off to sell to witch doctors (yes, really), living “in the skin of a white person”, as Refilwe …

The First Official Portrait of Kate Middleton is Just Awful

The first official portrait of Kate Middleton has been revealed, and oh boy, what a disaster! The artist, photorealist painter Paul Emsley, told The Mirror he found that the Duchess of Cambridge’s “beauty” made it more difficult to convey her character.

So rather than allow the warmth of her personality to shine through her beauty (the combination endears her even to non-royalty-worshippers like me), he managed to strip down both the beauty and the warmth. What we’re left with …

Do as I say, not as I do: for those of us who’ve always regarded the pat answers given by beauty pageant contestants as a little forced, there may be real reasons why beauty queens don’t say what’s really on their minds. Former Miss Pennsylvania USA Sheena Monnin has been ordered to pay the Miss USA pageant $5 million for defamation after her remarks that the pageant was fixed. Monnin, whose controversial exit was also tied to the …

And you thought bee stings were only for lips: A new(ish) trend is growing in Britain for bee-venom facials. The venom is extracted from the bees by keeping them in a glass container and vibrationally “agitating” them to sting (they supposedly keep their stingers in this procedure). An unspecified amount of this venom is included in a cream which is applied during the facial. Danielli Marcelino of the Suddenly Slimmer Med Spa tells reporters that the treatment is a gentler …
